The Miami Heat secured their first victory of the NBA season by defeating the Atlanta Hawks 129–117 on Wednesday. Bam Adebayo led the way with 24 points and nine rebounds, helping Miami end a run of four defeats. Giannis Antetokounmpo also scored 24 points and collected 18 rebounds, while Andrew Wiggins added 18 points. The result gave Miami a much-needed lift after a difficult opening stretch and showed the team’s ability to make better use of its strength near the basket.
Miami established an advantage through its inside scoring, outscoring Atlanta 70–52 in the paint. The team also shot efficiently from the field, converting more than half of its attempts. Those numbers reflected a more direct offensive approach, with players attacking the basket and creating scoring chances close to the rim. Such pressure can be difficult for opponents to handle when defensive rotations are slow or help defenders are drawn away from their positions.
Atlanta remained in the contest and made a late effort to reduce the gap. Nickeil Alexander-Walker and rookie Kingston Flemings each scored 23 points for the Hawks, giving the home side strong individual contributions. The team managed to cut an 18-point deficit to six in the fourth quarter, but Miami responded with a late run to protect its lead. The finish showed the importance of maintaining concentration when an opponent begins to build momentum.
For Miami, the victory is a useful early result, but it does not erase the problems exposed in the opening games. Teams need consistency across four quarters, particularly on defence and in late-game situations. Coaches must also manage player minutes and find line-ups that can maintain pressure when starters rest. A first win can reduce some of the pressure, but continued improvement will be needed to build a successful season.
Atlanta, meanwhile, will look to address its recent defensive difficulties after losing three consecutive games following a promising start. Giving up a large number of points can place extra pressure on the offence, which must then score at a high rate to remain competitive. The Hawks will need to improve their defensive communication and limit easy opportunities near the basket.
The result also highlights the value of experienced players who can steady a team during difficult stretches. Adebayo’s scoring and rebounding gave Miami a strong foundation, while Antetokounmpo’s work on the boards helped the team control possession. As the season develops, both teams will be judged on whether they can turn individual performances into reliable team results.
