Brent Crude Tops 96 Dollars On New Strikes

Global oil markets saw Brent crude tops 96 dollars a barrel this week, marking one of the highest levels reached since the conflict between Iran and the United States began more than six months ago. The jump followed a fresh exchange of strikes that shattered hopes of a near term de-escalation.

The benchmark international crude climbed steadily through the trading session as news spread of Iranian missile and drone attacks against American positions in Jordan and Kuwait, launched in direct response to earlier American strikes against Iranian military targets near the Strait of Hormuz.

US benchmark crude also posted significant gains, trading well above levels seen just days earlier when the conflict had appeared to be entering a quieter phase. Energy analysts noted that hopes for a swift resolution to the standoff had faded considerably following this latest round of hostilities.

Market participants have grown accustomed to sharp price swings tied to developments in the conflict, though the scale of this latest escalation caught many traders by surprise. Just days earlier, oil futures had sold off on hopes the war might be approaching a diplomatic resolution.

One commodity strategist noted persistent skepticism that the conflict is nearing a genuine breakthrough capable of resolving the underlying disputes or restoring normal maritime traffic through the strait. This kind of caution has become increasingly common among analysts covering the extended standoff.

The Strait of Hormuz remains the central flashpoint throughout this conflict, given its critical role in global energy trade. Before the war began, roughly a fifth of the world’s oil and natural gas supply moved through the narrow waterway each day, making any disruption there felt quickly across global markets.

Beyond the direct exchange between American and Iranian forces, Iran allied militias operating in neighboring countries have also launched drone attacks against oil facilities in Saudi Arabia, adding further uncertainty to regional energy supply chains already strained by the broader conflict.

Airlines and shipping companies continue adjusting their operations in response to the elevated risk environment, with many vessels choosing longer, more expensive routes to avoid the most dangerous stretches of water near the strait. These adjustments have added meaningful costs throughout global supply chains.

Insurance costs for tankers operating in the region have climbed substantially throughout the conflict, reflecting the elevated risk that shipping companies and their insurers must now factor into every voyage through Gulf waters. This added cost ultimately flows through to consumers via higher shipping and fuel expenses.

Some analysts believe that oil prices could climb even further if the conflict continues escalating, potentially threatening the more significant disruptions to shipping that markets have largely avoided so far despite months of intermittent fighting. Others maintain hope that renewed diplomatic pressure could eventually calm the situation.

As the conflict continues without a clear end in sight, energy markets appear likely to remain highly sensitive to each new development. Until a genuine and lasting resolution emerges, traders across the globe will continue closely watching this volatile region for signs of further escalation or a possible path toward peace.
