Mitch Marner scored a power-play goal in overtime to give the Vegas Golden Knights a 2-1 win over the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday night. The result extended Vegas’s winning streak to four games and moved the team back into first place in the Pacific Division. Marner’s late goal came during a four-on-three advantage after Los Angeles was penalised in the extra period.
Marner took a wrist shot from the high slot and sent the puck past a screen in front of the Kings’ net. The goal was his second of the season and his first overtime winner since joining Vegas. Trevor Connelly also scored for the Golden Knights and helped set up the winning play. Goaltender Carter Hart made 26 saves to protect the narrow victory.
Los Angeles scored through Artemi Panarin but could not find another goal. The Kings remained without a win under new coach Peter Laviolette, adding to a difficult opening stretch. The team has struggled to turn strong periods into victories and has now started the season with four straight losses for the first time in franchise history.
Other NHL teams also produced notable results. Toronto defeated Colorado 6-3, with William Nylander recording two goals and three assists. Kirill Kaprizov scored a hat trick as Minnesota beat Florida 4-1. Tampa Bay edged the New York Islanders 5-3 after Brandon Hagel scored a late go-ahead goal and completed a hat trick with an empty-net goal.
Boston beat Philadelphia 5-1, while Edmonton defeated San Jose 3-1. Montreal edged Detroit in a shootout, and Carolina beat Chicago 5-2. Utah also recorded a win over Buffalo, while New Jersey defeated Vancouver 4-1. Nico Hischier scored twice for the Devils, including his 200th career goal.
The results show how quickly early-season standings can shift as teams build form. Vegas has gained confidence through a series of close wins, while Los Angeles needs to find a way to convert chances and improve its defence. Marner’s overtime finish was a clear example of how one disciplined power-play sequence can decide a tight game.
Vegas will look to maintain its momentum in the next round of fixtures. For Los Angeles, the priority will be to stop the losing run and give its new coach a more stable foundation. The season remains young, but every point can matter as teams compete for division position and a place in the playoffs.
