Global Markets Face Risks From Massive AI Bets Too
Global Markets Face Risks From Massive AI Bets Too

Global financial markets are facing a growing list of risks as high debt, persistent inflation, geopolitical tensions and rising borrowing costs place pressure on investors and governments. A new Reuters analysis warns that the strong performance of major stock markets may be less secure than it appears, particularly because a large part of recent growth has depended on enormous investments in artificial intelligence. The concerns come at a time when technology companies are spending record amounts on data centres, computer chips and other infrastructure needed to support AI services. Investors are now questioning whether those investments will produce enough future income to justify their cost.

The scale of spending is one of the main reasons financial analysts are watching the technology sector so closely. Major US technology companies, often described as hyperscalers, are expected to invest around $1.2 trillion in AI infrastructure next year, according to estimates cited by Danske Bank. That would come on top of an estimated $900 billion in spending during the current year. The money is being directed towards data centres, advanced processors, cloud systems and the electricity needed to operate increasingly powerful computing facilities. These projects have created business opportunities for chipmakers, software developers, construction firms and energy suppliers, while also helping support wider stock market growth.

However, the growing importance of AI companies has also created a concentration problem. Technology and AI-related shares now account for more than 40% of the S&P 500, making the performance of the wider US market heavily dependent on a relatively small group of businesses. The index has gained strongly over the past five years, but investors have recently become more cautious. The S&P 500 has fallen from its early October peak, while smaller companies have faced greater pressure because they are more sensitive to higher interest rates and borrowing costs. Analysts warn that a market led by a narrow group of expensive technology stocks may be more vulnerable if confidence in the AI boom weakens.

The concerns are not limited to artificial intelligence. The conflict involving Iran has pushed energy prices higher and increased uncertainty about the future supply of oil and gas. Higher fuel costs can affect transport, manufacturing, food production and household budgets. If energy prices remain elevated, central banks may find it harder to bring inflation back under control. That could lead to higher interest rates or delay expected reductions in borrowing costs. Businesses that rely on loans may then face greater expenses, while households could have less money available for spending after paying mortgages, credit cards and other bills.

Government debt is another pressure point. Global borrowing has continued to rise, leaving many countries with less room to respond to a major economic shock. Higher bond yields make it more expensive for governments to refinance existing debt and fund new programmes. Countries with weaker public finances may face difficult decisions about spending, taxation and financial support. Investors are also watching political disagreements that could reduce cooperation between major economies. When governments struggle to coordinate their responses, a problem in one region can spread more quickly through international trade, financial markets and supply chains.

The AI investment boom could become a particular concern if companies discover that the returns are slower or smaller than expected. Data centres require enormous amounts of capital, and their owners must generate enough income to cover construction, energy, maintenance and financing costs. Some businesses are borrowing heavily to expand their computing capacity, which could increase financial pressure if demand does not grow as quickly as expected. A decline in AI-related shares would not necessarily cause a wider crisis, but the sector’s large position in major stock indexes means that a sharp correction could affect investors far beyond the technology industry.

Despite the warnings, the analysis does not suggest that a market downturn is certain. Many large companies continue to report strong earnings, and employment conditions in several major economies remain relatively resilient. AI could also create productivity gains and new services that support long-term growth. The central concern is whether investors have placed too much confidence in a single source of market strength while overlooking other weaknesses. For businesses, governments and households, the coming months will test whether the global economy can manage high debt, geopolitical risks and the enormous cost of technological change without losing financial stability.
