Bernie Taupin, the celebrated songwriter best known for his long creative partnership with Elton John, has released a new solo album that offers a more personal look at his life and musical interests. At 76, Taupin has spent decades writing lyrics that became part of some of the most recognisable songs in modern popular music. His latest project, The Sea Has No Mercy, marks a different stage in his career because he has written both the words and the music. The album was recorded in Nashville and brings together folk, country and atmospheric sounds, reflecting a more independent creative direction.
Taupin has usually worked behind the scenes, allowing his lyrics and collaborations to attract attention while he remained less visible than the performers who recorded his songs. His partnership with John produced a large catalogue of internationally successful music, including songs that helped define the singer’s career. Despite that achievement, Taupin has often said he values a quieter life. He lives in a small community in California, where he can move around without attracting the level of attention that follows John. The contrast between their public lives has remained a feature of their long professional relationship.
The new album represents a more complete personal statement than Taupin’s earlier solo efforts. He previously released a project in 1971 that featured him reciting poetry over music performed by members of John’s band. He also formed a group called Farm Dogs during the 1990s, releasing two albums before the band eventually separated. Taupin has described those earlier projects as less committed than his current work. This time, he approached the album with a clear purpose, choosing to create something that reflected his own interests rather than trying to repeat the success of his work with another performer.
The Sea Has No Mercy contains a mixture of reflective songs and more direct observations about the world. Taupin has described the record as a late-life statement, with some tracks expressing frustration and others looking back on personal experiences. The music includes folk and country influences, along with darker atmospheric elements. One track, Joker, has a rougher sound that recalls the unconventional musical style associated with Tom Waits. The album also includes One Hundred Ways, a song about mortality and parenthood that features backing vocals from his daughter, Georgey.
Taupin’s decision to take on a more active musical role followed the publication of his autobiography, Scattershot, in 2023. The book included stories from his long career and offered details about the experiences that shaped his writing. He has spoken about his fascination with American history, which began when he was growing up in rural Lincolnshire. Before visiting the United States, he was already writing songs inspired by the stories and images of the American West. That interest influenced material recorded with John, including songs on the 1970 album Tumbleweed Connection.
His life has also included experiences far removed from the recording studio. During the 1970s, he became part of a circle of musicians and celebrities in Los Angeles who were known for their extravagant social lives. Taupin later referred to the group as the Hollywood Vampires. He has also developed a strong interest in professional rodeo, including involvement in the ownership of a champion bucking bull. His daughter has pursued rodeo competition in Texas, and the family connection has become part of his recent creative life. These experiences show the range of interests that sit alongside his songwriting career.
Taupin has modest plans for promoting the album, including a performance at Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry with his daughter. He is also preparing for a career-spanning documentary expected later this year. Although he has expressed interest in making another record, he does not expect the new attention to change his preference for a relatively private life. For listeners, the album provides a rare opportunity to hear the songwriter present his own musical voice. It also shows how an established artist can explore a new direction late in a long career without leaving behind the experiences that shaped his work.
