Le t\u00e9lescope infrarouge de 20 pieds (6 m\u00e8tres) am\u00e9liorera la d\u00e9fense plan\u00e9taire en permettant aux astronomes de trouver des ast\u00e9ro\u00efdes et des com\u00e8tes \u00e0 moins de 30 millions de miles (48 millions de kilom\u00e8tres) de l&#8217;orbite terrestre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Son lancement est pr\u00e9vu pour le premier semestre 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Le t\u00e9lescope aura la capacit\u00e9 d&#8217;acc\u00e9l\u00e9rer la vitesse \u00e0 laquelle (la NASA) peut d\u00e9tecter les ast\u00e9ro\u00efdes et les com\u00e8tes qui pourraient constituer une menace pour la Terre. Il est con\u00e7u pour d\u00e9tecter 90 pour cent des ast\u00e9ro\u00efdes de 140 m\u00e8tres (459 pieds) et plus&#8221;, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 le Dr. Michael Kelley, chef de programme au Planetary Science Division de la NASA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hier, mercredi 30 juin, a eu lieu la Journ\u00e9e mondiale des ast\u00e9ro\u00efdes, une journ\u00e9e mise en place en d\u00e9cembre 2016 par l&#8217;Assembl\u00e9e g\u00e9n\u00e9rale de l&#8217;ONU &#8220;afin de comm\u00e9morer chaque ann\u00e9e, au niveau international, l&#8217;anniversaire de l&#8217;explosion de la Toungouska (Sib\u00e9rie, F\u00e9d\u00e9ration de Russie) survenue le 30 juin 1908 et de sensibiliser la population aux risques d&#8217;impact d&#8217;ast\u00e9ro\u00efdes&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>En 1908, un puissant ast\u00e9ro\u00efde a heurt\u00e9 une rivi\u00e8re dans une for\u00eat isol\u00e9e de Sib\u00e9rie, en Russie. Des for\u00eats ont \u00e9t\u00e9 endommag\u00e9es sur une superficie de 770 miles carr\u00e9s. L&#8217;impact de la collision a violemment secou\u00e9 des gens qui se trouvaient dans une ville situ\u00e9e \u00e0 40 miles de l\u00e0.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cet \u00e9v\u00e8nement a \u00e9t\u00e9 \u00e0 l&#8217;origine de l&#8217;initiative des astronomes de faire prendre conscience aux occupants de notre plan\u00e8te des menaces que repr\u00e9sentent ce ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne. La d\u00e9tection des objets g\u00e9ocroiseurs capables de causer des dommages importants est un objectif majeur de la NASA ainsi que d&#8217;autres organisations spatiales dans le monde.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>En 2010, la NASA a atteint son objectif en ayant r\u00e9ussi \u00e0 d\u00e9tecter 90 % de tous les objets g\u00e9ocroiseurs de plus de 1 000 m\u00e8tres (3 280 pieds).
