In November 2023, Dubai will host the 28th UN Environmental Change Meeting, known as COP28, which the Vice President and Top state leader of the UAE and Leader of Dubai, Sheik Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, has declared as the UAE’s most significant event in 2023. This global multilateral conference will bring together around 140 heads of state and government, 80,000 attendees, and thousands of media professionals, with the primary focus on finding practical solutions to the pressing climate crisis.

To ensure that COP28’s branding effectively conveys the urgency and opportunity associated with addressing environmental change, the organization engaged in a competitive pitch process and selected “Personality” from 17 organizations to develop the branding. The goal was to create a brand identity that reflects unity, innovation, inclusivity, and a strong sense of urgency while maintaining a sophisticated style.

The chosen logo, at first glance, appears as a complete circular shape, reminiscent of the globe and its continents. However, upon closer examination, it reveals a multitude of specific stories that resonate with the unique experiences of environmental change. This collection of symbols, ranging from individuals and sustainable energy innovations to wildlife and nature, represents the richness of both natural and technological resources and underscores the need for comprehensive and groundbreaking environmental action across all sectors.

The design is characterized by hope, portraying all life harmoniously with a sense of balance restored through action. It incorporates forward-looking innovations like solar chargers and wind turbines, seamlessly integrated with the natural imagery of plants and animals. A vibrant lime color was selected to create a modern and memorable look, introducing a new colorway that sets COP28 apart.

The branding is intended to capture the essence of COP28, which, like our planet, is complex and multifaceted. It presents a rich and busy design while maintaining a sense of order. Ultimately, the branding aims to advocate for the event, its participants, the UAE, and, most importantly, the cause of addressing environmental change and preserving our one Earth.

In 2023, the international community will convene to reinvigorate efforts to combat climate change, with Character playing a crucial role in telling the story of COP28 and driving the global conversation toward action and delivery.
